FM Systems For Hearing Impaired Students

A Frequency Modulated system, or an FM System, is a device used to make difficult listening situations easier. Even with the use of hearing aids, many hearing impaired children still do not get the education they need because they are unable to hear the lessons. This creates disequilibrium in the students because they are not able to understand the meanings of lessons.  There are many situations in which we use our hearing every day, including background noises and subtle speech. By having an FM system, students will be able to hear and learn with greater ease. Children need to be able to hear at their highest in order to communicate with the world around them.

This website will provide information needed to understand how the FM System works, and how it can be used in educational purposes

and PR-216 receiver with neck loop

There are two parts to the FM System:

1.) The Transmitter and Microphone: This portion of the FM System picks up the voice from the microphone and transmits it to the childs ears. The transmitter and microphone are both worn by the teacher or parent.

There are two types of microphones available, the lapel clip, and the boom microphone. The lapel clip is clipped to the shirt, approximately 6 inches from the mouth. boom microphonetype is worn approximately 3 inches from the mouth. The transmitter also comes with audio cable to enable connection to other audio devices.

2.) The Receiver: The receivers are small, lightweight, and easy to use. They are attached to the hearing aids, and when they receive asound from the transmitter, the recievers will deliver it to the hearing aids.

FM Systems allow for more freedom for teachers because no matter where the teacher stands in the classroom, the student will hear the teacher's voice as if it was coming from a few inches away. In addition, many FM systems also have connection ports that allow teachers to connect audio and audio-visual equipment to the FM transmitter, which provides a clear audio signal to the student.
